I have played ALL previous titles of this series and all the add-ons, so I feel entitled to review this 6th iteration of my favorite game.I welcome new ideas in this series. I actually enjoyed many of the game mechanic changes of Heroes 4, which many die-hard-fans hated. Yet, despite the horrible artwork, character and creature design Heroes 4 felt like a Heroes game. I did not follow the development of Heroes 6 on forums and fan pages, just bought it as it came out and delved right in. I bought hard copy DVD version, I like manuals and such, but there is no nice little booklet. Disappointment could have just used the download version. While you could pick up any of the previous titles and feel right at home, Heroes 6 is a stranger, at best a second cousin on your step mom's side. There is a load of changes that require your attention before you even start to play the actual game. Online... HOMM1 came out in 1995 and became an instant classic. And now, with a slight name change, the sixth installment "Heroes VI" is released, retaining the turn-based fantasy experience while adding a few notable changes to the underlying gameplay. One of the major changes is that all heroes and creatures now have separate might and magic stats, such as might attack, magic attack, might defense, magic defense, and so on. In older HOMM games, they had only one set of stats that applied to melee combats only, and had no defense against spells. In Heroes VI, when spells are cast against you, you actually have a magic defense stat that gives you some protection. Essentially this gives you some magic resistance that you may not have otherwise. Another big change is there is much more... It's the mind numbing amount of things that got through Beta that annoys me. I start my game, oh that's odd, my cursor is continually flashing as if it wants to give me a seizure. Ok... I'll go check out the site, hmm its seems that's quite common, they will fix it when they have time, otherwise thanks for 60 bucks and try to ignore it. Fine, I'll try to ignore it. Hey this game ain't bad, that was a great boss fight. You have lost connection. Excuse me? That's right, if you lose connection to their unstable server you are immediately booted out of your single player campaign... geeesh I hope you recently saved. I have been playing for three hours and this has happened four times. Fine! I'll play some multiplayer with... Read more |
